In the midst of the “New Year New Me” stage of the game most women are ready to chop off their lovely locks. Here’s a guide on how to Donate Your Hair.
Lately there’s been some back lash on donating to the charity Locks of Love, on whether they are charging families of children diagnosed with cancer for wigs created by sent in donated hair. With some research, I’ve discovered some non-for-profit organizations as alternatives.
Children with Hair Loss helps support not only kids who are diagnosed with cancer but as well as children suffering from alopecia, burn victims and any other medically related hair loss. Residing in Rockwood, Michigan, their mission is to help empower children and their self esteem by never charging any child for their donated wigs.
To donate:
- your hair must be at least 8″, which most places require 10.”
- Must be clean and dry and in a ponytail or braid with a hair tieĀ each end
- preferred non-chemically treated hair, but will accept “good condition”
- gray hair accepted
- donation form (printed from their site)
- everything has to be in a ziplock bag and sent to
- Children with Hairloss, Inc.
- 12776 Dixie Hwy.
- South Rockwood, Michigan
- 48179
Donors will be mailed a certificate for their contribution and for more information you can e-mail childrenwithhairloss@hotmail.com or call 1(888)4KIDS-HAIR
If you can’t meet these requirements but still want to contribute to a cause. This other alternative is great way to give back to the community and ecosystem.
Recognized in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, the Clean Wave Project, created by Matter of Trust, invented a brilliant solution to reuse hair clippings to clean contaminated water ways and storm drains. The idea of placing hair in mesh sausages and mats, are used to collect oil from hazardous oil spills.
If anything, I thought it was cool that even your pooch can get involved by collecting their hair clippings and send it in as well.
To get involved:
- Accepts ponytail 3 inches or longer, do not secure with rubber bands and send in an envelope.
- Loose hair, fur, wool, fleece, laundry lint, feathers are also accepted.
- Join excessaccess.org
After signing up through excess access, also founded by Matter of Trust, it will contact you about sending your donation to the nearest “spill depot, a classroom or a mat felting site.” For more info you can check out their website matteroftrust.org and search “Clean Wave,” along with other outreach community programs.
So if you ever think you have no money in order to contribute, you now have 2 non for profit locations you can donate your hair to. At the salon I offer my clients my service to donate their hair for them to encourage goodwill. Hope this was helpful.
